Desert Springs Hospital is
located midway to
The Las Vegas Strip and the
closest hospital for all the activity from The Strip. We
had obtained permission to photograph the curtains prior to
arriving at 5:00 pm. When we arrived, all 38 beds were filled
and the waiting room was backed up. The Nurse manager, who
was also the person that ordered the curtains, asked us to
come back around 3:00 am when she thought it would be quieter
and we could find an open bed.
She explained that the curtains
are an excellent "quiet distraction" for the patients in that
it gave her staff some relief from anxious patients and allowed
them to better manage their caseload. She also told us how
the night after the curtains were installed, the night crew
turned half of the curtains around so that they could get
the therapeutic benefits as well. All of the staff has noticed
that things just seem calmer since the curtains have been
installed.
When we returned in the early morning hours, nothing had changed,
all the beds were full and the patients just looked different.
After hanging around for four-hours and watching all the comings
& goings of the ER, we were able to get the panorama's below.
As we were packing up our gear, one of the nurses came over
and thanked us "for making her job that much nicer to come
to every day."
As we made our way home, we noted how working in the ER was
a stressful job that can be difficult under the best of circumstances.
We also felt a sense of accomplishment that our curtains can
make a positive difference in everyone during stressful times.
